Father’s Day is always a great time to celebrate the joys of family, but it’s always a struggle to figure out what to get your partner or your dad on Father’s Day.

Why not get fitted for hearing aids, or give the gift of a fitting?

Whether you’re a father, or you’d like to make a father you know a happier man, consider hearing devices as a present this year.

Consider giving your family the gift of hearing – and communication – this year!

Family relationships can be a beautiful thing, but they often require hard work. Through all the years, there are always going to be ups and downs, and often, a happy family requires both compromise and communication.

Communication is considered to be one of the most important things to secure a successful relationship, whether that’s familial or romantic. If the ability to communicate starts to break down, it can result in tension and feelings of anxiety between partners or between fathers and their children.

Untreated hearing loss can negatively impact a relationship

A recent study concluded that 65% of respondents reported that they find themselves getting annoyed when their partner is unable to hear them. Annoyance with a partner, particularly over a long period of time, could lead to severe frustration between two people, or within a family.

Another survey, conducted in the UK, reached out to 1,500 people over the age of 55. The results may surprise you! Nearly half (44%) of the people surveyed reported that their untreated hearing loss had made their relationships with loved ones suffer. Perhaps even more surprisingly, over a third (34%) of people had seen relationships fall apart because of difficulties they had with hearing loss.

It’s evident that the frustration, and sometimes anger, caused by straining to hear loved ones can in turn put strain on those relationships.

Why it’s important to tackle untreated hearing loss

There are so many reasons why treating hearing loss should be a top priority for anyone who experiences it. For starters, studies show that using hearing aids to treat hearing loss improves relationships with loved ones.

Hearing loss can also seriously impact upon mental health and overall wellbeing. It is well-documented that people who experience hearing loss are more likely to suffer from depression, anxiety  and social exclusion.

Often the stress or burden of going for a night out leads to people experiencing hearing loss to avoid social settings, usually to the frustration of their partner. That can have an impact on a relationship: a recent study from the University of Georgia indicated that couples socializing together can make a relationship stronger.

How you can overcome the difficulties of hearing loss

Thankfully, there’s an easy answer as to how you can mitigate the problems that arise from untreated hearing loss – the answer is hearing aids!

That said, of the 48 million Americans with hearing loss, most people will wait 10 years on average between their initial diagnosis and actually getting fitted for hearing instruments – and that’s only counting the 20% of people in the U.S. who actually seek treatment that would benefit from it.

As hearing health tends to degrade gradually, it’s feasible that during this time, your hearing loss could be getting worse. If that’s the case, your declining hearing health may not be very obvious to you, but it’s likely pretty clear to the people around you! That’s why it’s important to keep communication flowing between you and your family, and to listen to them if they have concerns about your hearing abilities.

Another reason why communication is important is that studies show that when significant others become educated about hearing loss and learning about communication strategies, there is a direct link to an overall increase in satisfaction and quality of life.

If you’re racking your brain for a present this Father’s Day, or you’re thinking about giving back to your family, consider getting tested or fitted for hearing aids this year. There’s no reason to delay!
